In a world where connection and compassion are pivotal to healing, BrightView’s recent virtual forum, “Navigating Recovery: How Social Support Improves Outcomes” explored the critical role of social support and case management in recovery from substance use disorders. This event brought together experts Lois Miller-Martone, LIDC, Sarah Goodlet, CADC, and Trevor Williamson, LSW for a candid look at how access to resources can be a critical piece of the puzzle in recovery.

The Power of Connection

Sarah started the discussion by driving home the idea that isolation often exacerbates addiction, while meaningful relationships can be the cornerstone of recovery. The forum posed an important question: can personal and community support be used interchangeably? While they serve different purposes, both are essential to building resilience and fostering long-term recovery.

Key Insights and Findings

Lois shared groundbreaking research on how early connections, social bonds, and community structures can either protect against or increase the risk of addiction. A startling finding revealed that individuals with strong support systems are 1.5 times more likely to remain in treatment and experience higher rates of abstinence.

Patients receiving consistent social support report a 20% higher rate of abstinence at six-month follow-ups than those without it.

Challenges and Provider Actions

Trevor discussed obstacles such as stigma, burnout, and systemic barriers. Attendees were encouraged to adopt actionable strategies like normalizing the use of social services, educating patients with clear and concise direction, and streamlining collaboration across providers. A strong emphasis was placed on staff training and cultural competency to elevate the quality of services delivered to patients.
