Treatment disparities are considered one of the biggest issues facing vulnerable populations when trying to access addiction treatment. BrightView’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Corey Waller, and SAMHSA’s Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), Dr. Yngvild Olsen, sat down to discuss SAMHSA’s efforts to impact these issues.

The conversation focused on how barriers including housing instability, transportation, language differences, and social factors prevent many underserved communities from accessing care. Their insights often pointed to evidence-based resources communities can tap to help address these issues.

Culturally Competent Care

SAMHSA’s strong commitment to cultural competency became clear during the discussion. To tailor healthcare to meet the unique needs of diverse communities there must be active outreach and meaningful collaboration in communities. Community involvement is essential in designing services that are accessible and impactful in reducing healthcare disparities.

“No two patients are the same but, unfortunately, a one-size fits all treatment approach has been the norm. SAMHSA is focused on helping communities provide services in a culturally responsive and appropriate way.”
– Dr. Yngvild Olsen, SAMHSA’s Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment

If You Measure It, You Can Manage It

The discussion also stressed the importance of data collection and analysis in addressing healthcare disparities. And while SAMHSA uses various data sources to guide its efforts, it realizes a balance is required to ensure providers are not overwhelmed. This requires understanding what data is needed vs. what data is nice to have.
