National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week® (NDAFW), celebrated March 21st – March 27th, 2022, helps bring awareness and information to the community about the dangers and warning signs of drug and alcohol use. Started in 2010 by a group of scientists at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the goal of NDAFW is to dispel the myths that teens may hear and believe about drugs and alcohol to prevent use and abuse. NDAFW serves to promote educational, science-based activities around the country through live events and virtual chats. At BrightView, we understand the consequences of drug and alcohol addiction and have developed treatment programs to meet patients’ needs at every stage and level of addiction. We help educate parents and family members about the signs and symptoms of addiction and provide substance abuse treatment to get loved ones on the road to recovery. What Is National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week?

During NDAFW, teens and scientists join forces to discuss the effects drugs and alcohol have on the body and brain and their influence on thoughts and behaviors. In collaboration with schools and communities around the country, NIDA disseminates information, resources, and tips to teens to prevent drug and alcohol use and abuse. Some of the activities that may be utilized in a classroom setting and at home include:

  • National Drug and Alcohol IQ Challenge to test students’ knowledge about drugs and alcohol
  • Drug Facts Challenge is an interactive game using facts about addiction and the brain
  • Science and standards-based “Mind Matters” classroom lessons explaining the effects of various drugs
  • Social media posts to share facts, destroy common myths about drug and alcohol use, and promote wellness

NDAFW is not just for teens. It provides a great opportunity for parents and guardians to learn about the signs and symptoms of drug and alcohol use and how to initiate conversations about it.

Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Teens

Awareness and knowledge of drug and alcohol facts is an important step in preventing drug use in teens. Parents play an important role in their children’s use and possible addiction. With open and honest lines of communication, families can breach the often-difficult subject about the dangers of drug use and the effects that they have on teens’ bodies and minds and their future success and happiness. With the help of the National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, parents can learn how to engage with their children to encourage problem-solving, open the door for questions about substances, and set the stage to share their own concerns about vulnerabilities, boundaries, and consequences. The experienced addiction specialists at BrightView can help parents and guardians to have those difficult conversations with their children about the dangers of drug and alcohol use to deter them from using. If you suspect that your teen may face addiction, find out how a substance abuse treatment program can help by calling 888.501.9865 or using the online form.
