How Suboxone Works
Suboxone is a brand name of a buprenorphine/naloxone medication. Other brand names include Sublocade, Brixadi, and Subutex. This medication curbs cravings while providing relief from painful or uncomfortable opioid withdrawal symptoms. Suboxone is safe for long-term use and is part of a comprehensive approach to treatment that involves counseling and case management.
Initial Induction

At first, your provider will monitor any withdrawal symptoms you may be experiencing and use Suboxone as needed. During this time, they’ll review your medical information to ensure that you’re receiving Suboxone at the right dosage.
Outpatient Treatment
– Heal –
While in treatment, you’ll continue to take Suboxone as your provider prescribes. You’ll engage in group therapy and one-on-one counseling sessions to help you work through the underlying causes of opioid use disorder.
Medical Taper
– Recover –
Your provider will work closely with you to determine the right approach for your continued recovery. Some patients benefit from a medical taper as part of their treatment plan, while others continue to take Suboxone to promote long-term recovery.
