About the film

Addiction Ultimatum is a 43-minute recovery story brought to you by BrightView Health. We operate outpatient recovery services in more than 70 locations across five states.

The film was inspired by conversations with Dr. Gilbert Schmidt, a physician who has spent decades helping patients find freedom from alcohol and drugs. Dr. Schmidt tells his patients that addiction is a disease with three outcomes: jail, death, or recovery.

Director and executive producer David McDonald turned that stark reality into the driving force of this project. He says, “This movie is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and a reminder that no one is alone in their struggles. It's about the choices we make, the support we give, and the love that sustains us. It's about understanding that every ultimatum presented by addiction is an opportunity to reclaim life.”

The stories shared are powerful reminders of how difficult life can become when struggling with a substance use disorder. Yet many people who have faced these challenges have gone on to build meaningful and fulfilling lives in recovery. With the right resources and care, you or your loved one can do the same.
