It’s a new year, which means it’s the perfect time for a fresh start. If you’re struggling with alcohol or substance use disorder, recovery could be the right step towards writing a new chapter. Recovery can give you a more fulfilling, happier, healthier life.

Deciding to seek help is a big step, and it’s normal to have questions about where to begin.

At BrightView Health, we work with people every day who are considering addiction treatment for the first time. These are some of the most common questions we hear, and the ones we encourage people to ask before choosing a provider.

But once you decide you’re ready for treatment, where do you begin? If you’re considering making an appointment at an addiction treatment center, start with these five questions to help make the search process go smoothly.

1. Do I Need Inpatient or Outpatient Treatment?

Addiction treatment is not one-size-fits-all. The treatment someone needs is often dependent on their lifestyle and the severity of their condition. The two forms of care that are most commonly offered are inpatient treatment and outpatient treatment.

Inpatient treatment may be appropriate for individuals who need 24/7 medical supervision or a highly structured environment. Outpatient treatment, on the other hand, can provide comprehensive, evidence-based care while allowing people to continue working, caring for family, and staying connected to their daily lives.

For many people, outpatient treatment offers the structure and medical support they need without removing them from their responsibilities or support systems.

2. What Is My Goal in Recovery?

When starting recovery, it’s important to understand your reasons for seeking help and find a clinic that aligns with your goals and needs.

Some people are focused on stabilizing their health. Others want support managing cravings, improving mental health, rebuilding relationships, or returning to work. There is no single “right” goal.

A quality treatment provider should take the time to understand what matters most to you and help build a plan that supports both your immediate needs and long-term wellbeing.

3. What Treatment Services Do They Offer?

Once you understand your goals, dig into the different treatment services offered at the places you are considering. Do they offer medication for addiction treatment (MAT)? If they offer MAT, do they prescribe the specific medication you need, like Suboxone, Vivitrol or methadone? Is therapy or counseling included in treatment? At this clinic, do they provide case management or other recovery resources?

Effective addiction treatment often addresses more than substance use alone. Medical care, counseling, peer support, and help navigating housing, employment, or legal challenges can all play a role in long-term recovery.

Before starting at an addiction treatment center, it’s helpful to know the answers to these questions.

4. How Am I Paying for Treatment?

Getting help and finding treatment is the number one priority. However, it is also important to know how you plan on paying for care. Make sure that the rehab center you choose accepts your insurance. If you don’t have insurance, check to see if they allow self-pay and provide an assisted payment plan.

A treatment provider should be transparent about costs and willing to help you understand your coverage and options before you begin care.

5. What Ongoing Support Do They Provide?

Beginning recovery is an important step, but it is often just the first part of a longer journey.

Recovery changes lives for the better but also reveals other struggles that need to be addressed. If you need further assistance, it’s important to know if the treatment center offers sober living referrals, career assistance, family therapy, continuing outpatient care, aftercare planning or other forms of assistance.

Searching for the right addiction rehab clinic may be overwhelming at first, but thinking over these questions before choosing one can help make the process less stressful. Be prepared and understand the kind of treatment you need to start feeling better.
