How Can You Support a Loved One Struggling with Addiction?

When a loved one suffers from addiction, it’s normal to want to help. But you may not know where to begin. Here are some tips for supporting a loved one who is struggling with an alcohol or substance use disorder.

Educate yourself

One of the best ways to help someone battling addiction is to educate yourself about their disease. Many resources are available online and, in your community, to help you learn more about addiction, its causes, and its effects. By understanding addiction, you can better understand your loved one’s struggles and provide more effective support.

Encourage them to seek professional help

Battling addiction alone is not easy. Provide them with information about addiction treatment options that can help them towards a successful recovery. Just remember, they may not be ready to get help. You may need to approach this with them more than once.

Set boundaries and stick to them

Although it may be difficult, setting healthy boundaries is critical to recovery. Avoid enabling your loved one by providing them with money for illegal substances or excusing their behavior. Encourage them to take responsibility and seek help.

See a therapist who is experienced with addiction

A loved one’s addiction impacts family members and friends too. Counseling can be beneficial even if you are not the one with a substance use disorder. These licensed professionals can provide you with support and guidance through difficult times.

Be honest, supportive, and patient

Support is essential for anyone battling addiction. Let your loved one know you support them and are there for them, no matter what. But at the same time be open and honest about how their addiction has affected you and your relationship with them. It may take some time for them to begin recovery so be patient with them.
