Marijuana Addiction

Cannabis, or marijuana, is one of the most commonly used substances in the United States. While some people use it without major problems, research shows that about three in 10 users develop cannabis use disorder.

One reason quitting marijuana can be tough is the strength of today’s products. Dispensaries sell stronger strains, edibles, and concentrates that can cause dependence and withdrawal. Many people feel irritable, have trouble sleeping, crave marijuana, or struggle at work or school when they try to stop.

The good news is that recovery is possible. BrightView offers personalized care for cannabis dependence. With the right mix of therapy, medical care, and ongoing support, we can help you move forward.

What is cannabis and THC?

Marijuana comes from the cannabis plant, which has a chemical called THC. THC is what causes the “high” people feel when smoking or eating marijuana. Some people also use medical marijuana to help with pain, PTSD, anxiety, or sleep issues.

Years ago, cannabis usually had less than 1% THC. Today, many strains have 15% or more, and edibles or concentrates can be even stronger. These high levels of THC make it easier to develop dependence.

Cannabis also has another compound called CBD. Unlike THC, CBD does not cause a “high” and is generally considered safe. Some people use CBD to help with anxiety or sleep.

Signs, risks, and when to get help

Not everyone who uses marijuana develops problems. However, regular or heavy use can lead to dependence. Warning signs include:

  • Needing more marijuana to feel the same effects
  • Struggling to cut back even when you want to
  • Spending significant time using or recovering from use
  • Continuing to use despite problems at work, school, or in relationships

If more than one of these sounds familiar, you may need professional help. BrightView can help you decide if treatment is right for you and discuss next steps.

Withdrawal and early support

Marijuana withdrawal can be uncomfortable. With proper support, though, you can move through it safely. Symptoms usually begin within 24–48 hours of last use and peak in the first four to 14 days.

A typical withdrawal timeline may include:

  • First week: Irritability, sleep problems, loss of appetite
  • Days 7–14: Cravings and mood swings
  • First 30 days: Gradual improvement with counseling and support

At BrightView, our outpatient programs provide medical and therapeutic support during this time.

How treatment works at BrightView

We take a holistic, evidence-based approach that addresses both cannabis use and overall well-being. Treatment is tailored to your personal goals and challenges, and includes:

  • Individual therapy: Find out why you use marijuana and learn new ways to cope
  • Group therapy: Learn from others and share your story in a safe, judgment-free space
  • Case management: Guidance with housing, employment, and access to local resources

Co-occurring mental health conditions

Cannabis use often overlaps with conditions like anxiety or depression. At BrightView, we screen for both and design treatment plans that address them together. Our approach helps patients stop self-medicating and supports long-term healing.

Aftercare and relapse prevention

Recovery doesn’t stop when your initial program ends. BrightView provides aftercare and relapse prevention plans to help you. These may include:

  • Continued work with an individual therapist
  • Referrals to peer support groups like Marijuana Anonymous or SMART Recovery
  • Clear steps for fast re-entry if a relapse occurs

Comprehensive aftercare helps you maintain progress and reduces the risk of relapse.

You’ll start with an assessment so we understand your history and goals. From there, we create a personalized treatment plan. Your plan can include counseling, group therapy, and case management support.

Right now, there are no FDA-approved medications specifically for marijuana withdrawal. That’s why therapy, coping strategies, and supportive care are so important during recovery.

Not always. Some patients will gradually taper their use with clinical guidance. Others stop right away. Your care team will recommend what’s safest and most effective for you.

Yes. Our outpatient programs are designed to fit into your life. We offer flexible scheduling and same-day appointments. Some patients can also access telehealth options. Treatment doesn’t have to interrupt work, school, or family responsibilities.
