Do I have alcohol use disorder?

Warning signs of high-risk drinking include:

  • Drinking alcohol more or longer than intended
  • Being unable to cut back or stop, even when you try
  • Strong cravings for alcohol
  • Spending a lot of time drinking or recovering from drinking
  • Drinking even when it causes problems with health, work, or relationships

If one or more of these describe you, you may want to explore treatment for alcohol use. Getting help for AUD now can improve your health and quality of life.

Don't wait to address substance use disorder

Alcohol use disorder is a serious medical condition. You deserve real recovery, and BrightView is here to help. Schedule an appointment today at a location near you. We also accept walk-ins on weekdays at all of our outpatient treatment centers. At BrightView, we treat you like a person. We treat addiction like a disease.

Mental health and alcohol issues

Alcohol misuse often occurs alongside mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, or PTSD. At BrightView, we treat both alcohol use and mental health at the same time. This whole-person approach supports deeper healing and lasting recovery.

What to expect at BrightView

BrightView offers same-day scheduling so you can start alcohol treatment as soon as possible. Here’s the typical care process timeline on Day 1:

Registration

We’ll gather basic health and background information.

Medical induction

We’ll ask about current medications, symptoms, allergies, and preferred pharmacy. You’ll complete a judgment-free urine screen and we’ll take your vitals.

Provider visit

One of our providers will do a comprehensive medical examination to inform you of your individualized treatment plan.

Clinical assessment

We'll gather more detailed information about your health and substance use history, so we can create a tailored plan to help you move forward.

Dosing

We’ll show you how to use any prescribed medications safely. Prescription medications help lessen alcohol cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

During your second appointment, you'll begin more of your care plan. This may include one-on-one counseling and group therapy.

The length of outpatient care depends on your needs. Some people are ready to move forward after a short time, while others may need longer, especially if withdrawal is tough or there’s another mental health concern. Our goal is to give you care for as long as you need it.

Medications for alcohol use disorder

We often prescribe FDA-approved medications as part of treatment for alcohol use disorder. Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is a form of medical care that helps lessen your withdrawal symptoms and cravings.

With the right medication and dosage, you have less physical and mental discomfort and can take full advantage of the other parts of AUD treatment. You and your provider will discuss whether medication is right for you and which option fits best. Some medications approved for treating alcohol use disorder include:

Naltrexone (Vivitrol)

Available as a daily pill or a monthly injection, it helps reduce cravings and makes alcohol less rewarding.

Evidence-based therapies we use

Medication is most effective when combined with counseling and social support. At BrightView, we offer:

  • Individual counseling: Explore the reasons behind your drinking and develop new strategies for long-term recovery.
  • Group sessions: Share experiences with others who understand what you’re going through and build a supportive network.

Detox and support for alcohol use

Starting treatment can feel scary, especially with concerns about withdrawal. Here’s what to expect:

Alcohol withdrawal typically begins six to 24 hours after your last drink. It tends to peak around 72 hours and can last up to a week. Symptoms may include:

  • Anxiety or nervousness
  • Irritability and mood changes
  • Shakiness or tremors
  • Sweating
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Difficulty sleeping or vivid dreams
  • Increased heart rate or blood pressure
  • Confusion or trouble concentrating
  • Fever or sweating that doesn’t ease up
  • Intense alcohol cravings

In some cases, heavy drinkers may experience seizures or hallucinations. While not common, detox is safer under medical supervision. MAT can ease symptoms, and medical staff are there if complications arise.

Aftercare and relapse prevention

Recovery is an ongoing process. It doesn’t end after outpatient treatment. That’s why BrightView creates personalized aftercare plans for every patient. Your plan may include:

  • Ongoing counseling
  • Support groups outside of BrightView, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)
  • Telehealth check-ins with your BrightView team

Tailoring your aftercare to match your needs means you have multiple layers of support to help keep your recovery on track.

Outcomes you can expect from alcohol treatment

Successful alcohol use disorder treatment outcomes include:

  • Reduced or no alcohol use
  • Improved physical and mental health
  • Better relationships and daily functioning
  • Real strategies in place to prevent relapse
  • A stronger social support network

Relapse isn't 100% preventable, but effective treatment gives you tools to get help and get back on track faster if a relapse occurs.
