Changing the Conversation Requires Us to Change How We Discuss Addiction Treatment & Recovery

Eliminating the stigma of addiction is difficult, in part, because of how embedded it is within aspects of our culture. As a result, despite even the best intentions, our own words can indirectly reinforce certain stereotypes and negative connotations.

Using non-stigmatizing language improves communication with people in recovery and helps raise awareness of the need for simple, easy-to-understand terms that don’t have a negative impact.

Changing how we talk about addiction and recovery is an important first step. With nearly 40 different terms and phrases identified in our guide, we hope it proves to be a useful resource.
